A brand new world

I did something very impulsive this week. I bought a Holga. Say what? A Holga; a toy camera. I bought a modified version of the 120 CFN which has color flash! YAY! No it's not a digital camera, so it's going to be a while before i can show you any pictures...

I went to several stores to ask for 120mm film but they just laughed at me. How customer friendly! So i decided to order a 35mm adapter right away. Unfortunately i'm still waiting for the adapter and i haven't taken any pictures yet. I can't wait to experiment a little though. Haha it's going to be a helluva lot of fun!

Art, Flowers & Muffins

Mum: So i enter my beautiful bathroom and what do i see? My pretty white washbasin turned completely black! And i think to myself, my creative daughter must have something to do with that...

Friday, right before the weekend, i all of a sudden felt an itch. And i knew right away, it's time to do something creative again; work on a little project. I looked online at some mixed media projects and loved it right away. Basically it's a work on paper or canvas that combines paint, ink, fabric, glitter, beads and collage. It may be obvious that many interesting effects can be achieved by using mixed media. But when creating a painted or drawn work it is important to choose the layers carefully and allow enough drying time between the layers.

I went to different stores and bought lots and lots of materials. But when i came home i decided i also wanted to use a photo. The printing service however needs 4 days to print my photo. In short: i haven't even started yet. I hope my itch won't leave me and that i will still be in the mood for art at the end of this week. Oh and the little project my mother found in our sink was just a test.

Dad: Next week we're getting frosted princess muffins! YAY!

Saturday i did some shopping and i took some more photos (see the Flickr). I bought two lovely spring dresses. They're both very cute. One of them i bought with a 50% discount. Unfortunately with the weather over here, it looks like i won't be wearing them soon. I also bought ingredients to make pink frosted princess muffins. I think i will bake them next weekend. My dad for sure is very excited about this. Of course i will post pictures (of the muffins not my dad).

Soon i will be bending spoons

Lately i have been running into a little problem at work. It's a science thing.

I walk across the rug to our cupboard, reach for the door and... ZAP! I get a static shock. I walk back to my desk, sit down, grab my desk and... BOING another shock.

I didn't really pay attention in science class so i had to do some research. Now, positive and negative charges behave in interesting ways. Did you ever hear the saying that opposites attract? Well, it's true. Two things with opposite, or different charges (a positive and a negative) will attract, or pull towards each other. Things with the same charge (two positives or two negatives) will repel, or push away from each other.

When you take off your wool hat (yes i have one!), it rubs against your hair. Electrons move from your hair to the hat. A static charge builds up and now each of the hairs has the same positive charge. Remember, things with the same charge repel each other. So the hairs try to get as far from each other as possible. The farthest they can get is by standing up and away from the others. And that is how static electricity causes a bad hair day!

As you walk across a carpet, electrons move from the rug to you. Now you have extra electrons and a negative static charge. Touch a door knob and ZAP!

Static Elimination Tips
1) Increase the humidity in your house and workplace. Air is much drier in the winter, which increases the frequency and severity of shocks. Use a humidifier.
2) Change clothes, wear natural fibers because synthetics pick up more of a static charge.
3) This one is a bit lame, if you're a girl that is.. Change shoes. I mean as if! I'm a secretary! I'm not going to wear special conductive shoes made for people working in the electronics industry!
4) If your skin is dry you are more vulnerable as well.
5) Go back to the sixties and walk barefoot to reduce the static build-up! Sounds more fun than covering your shoes with aluminium foil as well!
6) Carry a coin and use it to touch grounded metal objects when you can. This will stop the pain in your fingertips but not the static discharge.
7) Do not roll your chair around. I have to admit i do this ALL the time! I'm lazy...
8) Do not shuffle, there's no need to drag your feet.
9) Forget about those ants in your pants, don't be a fidget.
10) Be sure to ground yourself before touching sensitive electronic equipment.

So apart from the static shocks, work has been good. We sing a lot. Gangsta rap, a Beatle medley and even some oldies from Kinderen voor Kinderen (a Dutch children's choir). We are very versatile. The three of us, we also drink lots of tea. I took a picture of my desk drawer. I have more than ten (!) different kinds of tea stored in there. With the 'clean desk' hype and all, i should probably put something else in there though...

Yesterday Big girl all of a sudden yells, "I need to do something creative, right now!" We're such bureaucrats. The girl picks up a pair of scissors, gets crazy on the glue and voila! She made me a beautiful paper tulip! The scribbling in the background are meeting minutes. Damn it, i really have to finish them tomorrow!

Just let me be

The first word i said this morning is, "Jesus" and trust me it's not because i'm such a religious person.

My radio alarm clock went off and the first thing i hear is that Heath Ledger was found dead at an apartment in Manhattan. I can't say that i am a massive fan or anything but i have seen a couple of his movies such as Monster's Ball, The Patriot, 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight's Tale and of course, most notably his Oscar-nominated role in Brokeback Mountain. The thing is though, this news has been haunting me all day.

Barely two weeks ago Brad Renfro (The Client, Sleepers) died. Britney Spears is fucking up her life. These are the stars of my generation? What is going on in the world? Is the pressure really that high? If you can not deal with the world, what's going to happen to your children? The media really are disgusting as well! Life is precious. Whether it's your own or someone else's. Treat it with a little more respect.

You have to taste it

The secretariat where i work has a bunch of workshops every year. Since i'm new and all, last Thursday i had my first. It was a nice workshop. Fun and relaxing. Nothing like i'm used to; my old colleagues made each other cry and teambuilding days were never a pleasant experience. So it's nice to know things can be different. We practised speed writing, talked about time management, our qualities and our pitfalls. Interesting!

The five of us went out for drinks later. We went to this awesome lounge place. With soft comfy chairs and sofa's. Chandeliers, bright colours and a French baroque style. Gotta love it! We had a few drinks, two colleagues left. Big girl, Vee (both build in 1981 as well) and i were hungry so we decided to have something to eat. We went to this tapas bar and had a great diner! Damn, i'm definitely going back to that place. YUM! And it was pretty cheap as well!

Then they drag me along with them to the nightlife area of our town. On this square and surrounding streets lie clubs, bars and a movie theater. It's a very popular area for the residents and visitors. In summer it's filled with tables and chairs from all the bars and a lot of people can be found here sitting in the sun and enjoying a drink. But during the night, it becomes a pretty aggressive place.

First they went to this bar to see if there were any acquaintances but that place was stuffed with military people. So we left and went to this other bar. Had another drink. Vee and Big girl were both telling stories. Barely listening to each other. Everybody is trying to tell the most funny story. And once again i realized why i never go out all that much. I don't really fit in. It's not my thing. Not like that anyway. The clubs and bars like that don't do anything for me. So then they wanted to go back to that place with the military people and i followed them. But the place was packed and music was so loud! I got all claustrophobic and i told them i was gonna leave. After all it was a working day the next day. They made some stupid jokes because i still live at home and stuff, but i guess somebody always has to leave first. I told them to stay if they wanted to, but they came along.

So you know, i've tried. But most important is that you stay true to yourself. Very few people seem to do that these day. Most of them follow the crowd. I know that's the easy way, especially when you're young. But it's a hell of a lot more satisfactory to be who you wanna be.

Last night i got carried away by a musical film called Across The Universe. I'm definitely going to buy the DVD, it's that good! The story starts in the mid 1960s with a young shipbuilder named Jude (Jim Sturgess) who travels by ship to the United States in search of his American father. While searching for his father at Princeton, he befriends Max (Joe Anderson), a rebellious young man from a privileged background, and his sister Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood). Across The Universe is a fictional love story amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. But what makes this film really special is that over 30 Beatles' songs are woven into the plot.

Amazing performances. Cute little references (there's even a Ken Kesey one). Cameo performances by Bono, Eddie Izzard, Joe Cocker and Salma Hayek. It's a bizarre, artistic and beautiful movie musical, maybe almost a music video at times. It's a psychedelic Beatle ride...

Updates: i posted some new fanart (24, The Wire, Californication, Kate Hudson & Jim Morrison). The Flickr has been updated a lot as well.

I have heard it all before

Oh man! Why do these things always happen to me?!

Exactly a year ago we had this temp working here because his dad probably pulled some strings. He worked at a different building but he must have noticed me. I received an email from him. I decided to email him back because it was a nice email. Nice is hard to find these days. He left the Province after a while because his job was temporarily but we kept emailing. Very soon i found out he was not my type and i broke it off. Sporty guys hate to lose.

You probably have to know he's a judoka. Yeah a heavyweight. He's like a giant. One of those people that 'stamp' like Hagrid.

Although i did not hear from him in almost 11 months he sent me an email to wish me happy holidays last year. I ignored it.

Yesterday me and Big girl were outside enjoying our lunch break and i ran into him and his dad. He's still big and intimidating. But i decided to say "Hello" because i didn't want to come off as a bitch. If men can't have what they want, then you're a bitch.

Today i received another email from him. He uses so many exclamation marks and winks it ain't healthy. He wrote he found another job and it's very close to where i work. Shit.

I think i'm going to ignore this email as well. I made him clear i wasn't interested about a year ago. Stop being so thick-skinned boy.

Big girl, who is under the impression all the pretty boys like me, is having a blast these days. During our lunch break i got attacked by a cripple guy calling me names in my ear and this grubby little guy was checking me out on our way back. Must have been a hobo. And Big girl, who is starting to realize my life ain't rose-coloured at all, is having so much fun. Even on Facebook an old dude tried to add me as his friend.

I'm not really sure what to do with all these weird and freaky men. As Jimmy McNulty from The Wire put it, "What the fuck did I do?"

According to my mum it's genetic.

Maybe life is a dream

A lot of new series appear on TV every year. Only few make it. Even fewer are really great. Since i haven't talked about any series for a while now (god damn strike!), i figured i would dedicate this post to two series that in my opinion both deserve the title "Best New Show of 2007".

Hank Moody

CALIFORNICATION
A show about a novelist called Hank Moody who relocates to LA after his acclaimed book is optioned, but it later becomes a crappy romantic comedy, which sparks a horrible case of writer's block. He's struggling to get his career back on track with the help of his agent, raise his pre-teen daughter, all while longing for his ex-girlfriend, who is now engaged to another man. Desperate? There's drinks and drugs! He's holding it together while falling apart, and he doesn't mind it one bit.

A little controversial maybe (sex & tits) but what a fun show to watch! David Duchovny is extremely witty as Hank Moody. This is his midlife crisis so yeah we can laugh. I always found him a total loser in the X-Files and i'm glad he's no longer chasing aliens because this man has aged beautifully! He IS pretty hot! He delivers his lines perfectly! He's sarcastic and cynical, this is finally something fresh!

Hank Moody: "Enjoy the fuck out of your tampons!"

Charlie Crews

LIFE
A show about a man who is given a second chance. Life was his sentence. Life is what he got back. Detective Charlie Crews returns to the force after years in prison, after serving time for a crime he didn't commit. Yeah now think about that for a second. This cop show is not like any other. Charlie Crew's character alone is worth watching this show. He is captivating, sarcastic and witty. His zen-like qualities are refreshing in a world of criminal action.

I have a been a fan of Damian Lewis ever since i saw him in Band of Brothers. So i knew right away he was going to rock this show. This role fits him well. Quirky and intelligent. I can't wait to get deeper into the story because there are still so many questions.

Charlie Crews: "You don't have to understand here to be here."

Too much television watchin

We all have songs on our iPod that we feel a little embarrassed about right? I have a few, but 'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio is most def one of those songs...

A boring Friday afternoon at The Office. Power and the money, money and the power. It was already getting dark outside. Only a few lights were on. Me and Big Girl were partying behind our desks like true Gangsta rappers. Or at least we were pretending because we don't know shit about East coast nor West coast. Cause I've been blastin and laughing so long that even my mama thinks that my mind is gone. But we were totally feeling that song! You better watch how you talking, and where you walking. We were loud and proud, showing our moves!

But then the phone rang...

"What on earth are you two doing up there?!"

It was one of our colleagues (a.k.a. Bitchy colleague) calling us from the parking lot. Which obviously is a brilliant place to spy on your colleagues.

Nothing to feel embarassed about right? RIGHT? All in the game yo, all in the game.

Updates: new layout!

People should smile more

A single guy and his guitar. Jen and me in the audience. A laid back approach as he strolled onto the stage, dreadlocks and all, guitar in one hand, a little smile and hello. His warm, gentle personality captured the hearts of the audience instantly...

He is known for the percussive use of the guitar's body. When you actually hear and see this happening live on stage you will be flabbergasted. It's absolutely amazing what this guy can do with a guitar. It's almost as if you're listening to an entire band. His music is a mixture of heartfelt acoustic blues, with a pop edge covering a range of genres such as, folk, soul and country. And i have to say, he has an amazing voice as well.

In between songs he told us funny stories of his life and how he got started. He explained the story behind the cover 'Teardrop'. He told us that at first he wanted to play 'No Limit' by 2 Unlimited (which is an old Euro house/rave song) and then he actually played that on the guitar! The audience really enjoyed those little extras. Although it was just one man and one guitar, he was able to grab the attention of the audience as long as he was one stage.

Dream catch me, yea
Dream catch me when I fall
Or else I won't come back at all

Guess what? He even played the SpongeBob tune! ("But if i'm dead and this is what i'm remembered for i will come back and haunt you all!") He played a few songs that didn't make it onto the album. But for me highlights were definitely Dream Catch Me, Uncomfortably Slow, All I Got, To The Light and Gone In The Morning. He made us dance to UFO (for real!) and sing along with several songs. But we had to sing in a particular way. We had to sing as if we were Viking vampires with rabies!

Just when Newton told us he didn't know a lot of Dutch words except for "Dankjewel" ("Thank you") some guy in the audience started screaming, "Als je wilt kletsen, dan doe je dat maar ergens anders!" ("If you want to chat, you go and do that somewhere else") to a few people in the audience. Newton was looking really confused, not sure what just happened there but he replied with a, "Dankjewel". Again we were all laughing. But he's young and curious so right after finishing the next song he asked the audience what that was all about. Some people up front explained it to him. "Oh really?" with that delicious British accent, "I had no idea... Dankjewel!" He was just so funny! Sincerely funny!

Last but not least he played Bohemian Rhapsody. It took him about 7 months to turn that into a guitar song.

A special performance it was.

P.S. I have a flickr account (WOOHOO!). You can find a couple of pictures from the concert there.

The first one

I really started 2008 on the right foot. And i have to say, it feels pretty darn good!

Sometimes i see this kid at the bus stop, i don't think he's even 20 years old yet. He has long blond hair, wears glasses, a typical nerd. One of those guys that doesn't make friends easily. He wears flared jeans and you can't even tell if he's wearing shoes or not. Wednesday, my first day at work. It was early in the morning, still dark and cold. He says something to me. But i didn't catch what he said because i was listening to my iPod. He repeated, "Happy new year!" So i smiled and replied, "Thanks, you too!" In the meantime i was staring at his pimp hat and he said, "Yeah, i always see you at the bus stop and all.. you know." I gave him another smile because i just thought that was really sweet.

I found out Keith Caputo (a singer i love LOVE) is on Facebook as well. So i sent him a private message and he replied to it! I wrote him i was looking forward to the new album and asked if he was coming back to Holland soon (he lives partly in Holland). He wrote me back! He will be heading out to Holland soon and is preparing for another solo tour. He also told me i'm a very pretty woman and wished me a happy new year! His message really made me happy! This is a man who really touches my soul with his lyrics and music. Oh man and i can't wait for the new album. I missed his music.

I also ordered a new camera online last year. But because of the holidays i received it today. My old camera (a Canon Ixus 400) was well... old. I'm not really a fan of those gigantic camera's. I was looking for a point and shoot camera that i can carry around in my pocked or my purse. The new Canon looks so bulky! So i decided to switch to the other side and i bought myself a Nikon S700 urban black. Style and elegance meets high-resolution performance...

12.1 megapixel resolution lets you capture outstandingly detailed images, crop creatively and produce stunningly sharp poster-size enlargements.
Swift response 0.9 seconds power-up and fast release-time lag.
EXPEED image processing engine for optimum performance and maximum image quality.
2.7 in. acrylic LCD monitor 160-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle. With protective acrylic panel to help prevent scratches and fingerprints, and anti-reflection coating to simplify shooting in bright sunlight.
Optical 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens for incredibly sharp, clear images. 35mm equivalent of 37mm-111mm.
High sensitivity up to ISO 3200 enables faster shutter speeds to significantly reduce the risk of blurry images when you shoot fast-moving subjects or take pictures in low light.
Otical Vibration Reduction image stabilization system counters the effects of camera shake to produce sharp images and movies and deliver clear images in low light by offering effects equivalent to using a shutter speed 3 stops faster.
High Sensitivity mode minimizes image blur by automatically selecting the optimal light setting from ISO 64 to ISO 1600 to match the scene at hand.
High-quality metallic body the smallest in the world. And it looks so pretty! Size: 3.5 x 2.1 x 0.9 (89 x 54 x 23mm)
Advanced Face-priority AF can quickly detect and focus on up to 12 faces in the frame, and works together with Face-priority AE to meter the lighting around the face for more accurate exposure.
Distortion Control corrects barrel distortion automatically. Effects can be checked in real-time on the LCD monitor.
Rotary multi-selector enhances easy operation.

I can't wait to play around with it and try the image stabilization technology with which you're suppose to shoot noise-free images on the spot, and even in low light. I also ordered some extra accessories such as a bag, extra battery and a memory card. Maybe i should consider signing up for a Flickr account...

The Office: Today Big girl found some "bread" in her desk drawer. Apparently it had been there for almost three weeks. THE SMELL!!! As if she had been hiding a dead body in there! I had to choke... (She did too)
